The fact that there are as many as 60 million recreational cyclists in Europe, and that in the last few years cycling tours in Europe produced more than 25 million overnight stays, the tourist boards of Istiran towns Umag, Novigrad, Brtonigla and Buje together with tourism companies Istraturist Umag and Laguna Novigrad, have decided to start a cycling tourism project in northwestern Istria.

With the constant need also to extend the tourist season, the idea started back in 2011 and from then until today a cycling track has been in development and investment to the tune of 2 million kuna ( 260 thousand Euros).

“The key element in cycling tourism is an attractive bike track, accommodation with services for cyclists, bike friendly hotels and bike services. The northwest of Istria currently has 19 tracks with more than 550 kilometers of bike tracks, we have six bike hotels and more than 15 recreational bike racers and a few professional ones,” said Bernard Musulin, project manager for bike tourism for northwest Istria.

Musulin adds that bike tourism is just one of five products the project will offer. ” There will also be football, tennis, gourmet and wellness. During winter we will host many football schools and tennis camps at the facilities. The Croatian U-20 football team have their base here”, concluded Musulin.
